LIPPO CIKARANG - Forest fires are once more disturbing the normal way of life for many people in Riau province on the island of Sumatra. Forest fires, lit by people to clear land for agriculture or by people who want to hide that they actually stole wood from the forest, are causing a dense haze over the area which even reaches as far as peninsular Malaysia.
The governor of Riau, Rusli Zainal, has the perfect solution for this smoke. No, they do not do any effort to track down those who lit the fires. Why should they? The fires are already lit now! They could also look for proper ways to douse the fires, but that also does not seem to fit how the governor likes to act in his province. No, he asked the people to hold a mass prayer for rain.
Zainal asked the residents of his province to flock to mosques everywhere on Friday August 14 to hold a mass prayer called istiqah, in which people ask their God for rain. The governor said that he was not able to put out the flames because of a lack of funds. Calling everyone to prayer is indeed cheaper, he is right about that. "That is why I asked all mosques to organize a istiqah so Allah will bring rain to put out the fires," he said.
