JAKARTA - Terrorists planned to kill Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in revenge for the execution of the Bali bombers. However late yesterday Indonesia's National Police chief, Bambang Hendarso Danuri, would not confirm that South East Asia's most wanted man, Noordin M Top, had been shot dead after a 17-hour siege in Central Java.
It is believed the dead man is Top however General Danuri told a news conference he could not confirm that Top had been killed, saying the process of identification would take until next week. He would not even confirm whether the dead man looked like Top. It was initially believed there had been three people in the house but it turned out to be only one body. Next to it was an unexploded bomb.
General Danuri told a news conference about the circumstances leading to today's siege and the arrest of terrorists in the midst of planning a carbombing against the country’s leader. A man called Amir Abdilah was arrested in North Jakarta on August 5 and turned out to be a goldmine of information. He lead police to Top’s safehouse in Temanggung, Central Java and to another terror safehouse in Jati Asih, outside Jakarta.
It was at this house that hundreds of kilograms of explosives were being stored in readiness for the attack on the President, SBY. The attack had been planned for two weeks from August 1. The President’s home is about 12 minutes from the safehouse. At this house two men were shot dead as they attempted to launch bombs at police early yesterday.
One of them was Air Setiawan, a man arrested and jailed for his role in the Australian Embassy bombing and who, after release from jail in 2007, rejoined the terrorists. General Danuri said that Amir Abdilah had told police that on April 30,Noordin Top had conducted a meeting in West Java where he declared the target was to be SBY, who had allowed and supported the execution of the Bali bombers last year.
