LIPPO CIKARANG - Do you plan things as much as possible if you have the chance? That is what I do. Some of you will tell me that I should not live in Indonesia for that matter, but I think it's quite possible generally spoken. Others know that I have to do my own things and dropping by without informing me first is no problem as well, even if the door is not opened because I am not at home at the time they decide to visit me.
On the other side there are also invitations like this. In the last few days before the planned date the invitations have to be made. Whether it is for a marriage, baptism, circumcision or house-warming - like this invitation - it is always done at the last moment. Burials are not added to the list indeed, because most people - Muslems in this country - will be six feet under within 24 hours. Sending a letter is of no use, especially not with the Indonesian postal services.
The invitation below I received a short while ago. They are my new neighbors across the street, Christian as you can see with the use of the word 'Tuhan'. A big part of the neighborhood if Christian here, which causes it to stick together. Most of them however visit church less often than the priest is hoping for. Christmas indeed and in between every once in a while.
They would like me to shop up for their house-warming. I don't know them. They have moved in three weeks ago and there has not been much contact outside shaking a hand with them. They always seem to be away - their two cars are parked outside in the mornings, their motors running, ready to depart when breakfast is finished.
Don't expect a party at a house-warming. Most likely a Javanese snack (nasi kuning, mi goreng, a piece of chicken and some lalapan) and a drink (a glass of water) for visitors that will all say that the house looks great. In this case it actually does look good as well, seen from the outside. Curious as I am I will visit them tomorrow evening. The ultimate chance to do what Indonesians like to do; 'peeking' at their neighbors and people around them.

Received a short while ago, an invitation for tomorrow evening.
