LIPPO CIKARANG - Defeated in the first round of the presidential elections held earlier this month, Megawati Soekarnoputri will do everything to disrupt the democratic process as much as possible. She and her campaign team are calling on the General Election Commission KPU to hold a second round of presidential elections, a runoff between her and current President Yudhoyono - who also won the first round with a vast majority of the votes.
Megawati claims that some 28 million votes went missing in the presidential elections. Yudhoyono won that first round with 60.8 percent of the votes, while Megawati came in second at 26.7 percent. The third candidate, current vice-president Jusuf Kalla, came in third with just 12.4 percent. Gayus Lumbuun, the head of the legal team of Megawati's campaign management, says that there are two options; a second round or new elections in 28 out of the 33 provinces.
The claim of the missing 28 million votes is said to be backed up by proper documentation which has already been submitted to the court. Another member of the team said that the violations during the elections were not accidental. Foreign observers, which were taking a close look at the elections in various regions however have said earlier that there were no major problems during the elections.
Evidence in this case should be made public as soon as possible, since it can severely disrupt the political stability in Indonesia, which has been improving in recent years after Megawati was defeated by Yudhoyono in the last presidential elections held in 2004. Both Yudhoyono and Boediono, the future vice-president, know very well the behavior of Megawati - acting like a little child as if her candy has been taken away - is not worth reacting on at all, so they continue preparing for their five years in office.
