LIPPO CIKARANG - Hard to imagine that Indonesia will have to do it without new BlackBerry smartphones as early as next month. With almost one million units told in recent years - most of them in 2009 - the Indonesian government demanded that the owners of BlackBerry, Research in Motion (RIM) opens a service center in Indonesia. Guarantee cards and manuals should also be in the Indonesian language if distributed in Indonesia.
A new law adapted by the Department of Trade earlier this year demands distribution of handphones, smartphones and related items to be sold complying to new standards for the Indonesian market set by the government recently. The new regulations are mainly aimed at a product life of over one year, since a product normally has factory guarantee up to one year.
BlackBerry - which is a very popular name in Indonesia, in contrary to the company name RIM - has to set up six service centers in six large cities in Indonesia by early August. There are no regulations on which six cities that should be. They also have to get proper certification for their guarantee cards and manuals from the Department of Communication and Information Technology.
If BlackBerry doesn't comply, they can be brought to court for that, since they then violate laws that protect customers. The penalty for that is a five year jail term and a fine of 2 billion Rupiah (142.000 euro). This does not only apply for the producers of the products, but also the places who still sell the product after it has been banned.

It would be quite simple for BlackBerry; The capital Jakarta officially consists of five cities (West Jakarta, North Jakarta, Central Jakarta, East Jakarta and South Jakarta. Then go to Bandung or Bogor, and you already have six big cities.
