LIPPO CIKARANG - Every single day - maybe excluded of some religious holidays - is demonstration day in Jakarta. The city will never be free of mid-afternoon demonstrations on high-profile locations because of all those demonstrations in one day. But the problem is, that most of those demonstrations consist of a group of less than 50 people, often paid to join their little demonstration to make it look big and have their pictures taken for a local newspaper.
Those 50 people or less do often cause traffic jams around the afternoon rush-hour when tens of thousands of people hit the roads in their cars to get their lunch in the next office tower's basement. Looking for an alternative road is not an option as well, since downtown Jakarta mostly consists of too small streets and one-way streets with make going to the next office tower a trip of over one hour.
Today's demonstrations for example are organized throughout the city; 08:30 at the famous Hotel Indonesia traffic circle (guaranteed traffic jam); at 09:00 at 10:00 at different location in south Jakarta. And starting at 14:00 until rush hour another demonstration at the Bunderan HI, that traffic circle mentioned earlier indeed.
No effort at all is taken to move the demonstrations from the middle of the road to a roadside location. Enough space at the parking lot at Blok M in front of the new Carrefour, which is still closed at that time. There is also enough space IN the fountain at Bunderan HI instead of around it on the asphalt. Clean the roads for once and see how traffic is at least a bit better. No need for new roads, just some police that enforces a local bylaw instead of picking their noses.
