LIPPO CIKARANG - In the last few days it has become clear that the idea to blow up the restaurants of the J.W. Marriott Hotel and Ritz-Carlton Hotel might have originated from the Malaysian terrorist-on-the-run Noordin Mohammad Top, which is related to the Southeast Asian terrorist network of Jemaah Islamiyah. Also some pesantren (islamic boarding school) in Central Java are closely watched for their possible connection to that person.
Behind the scenes there might just be a thorough investigation going on about the whereabouts of some fugitives, of which is assumed that some of them are still in hiding somewhere in Indonesia. Mainly just on the island of Java, because terrorists can blend in with the local population just fine, as has been proven earlier when terrorists got busted in various cities on the island in recent years.
Fortunately ratted out by their own neighbors that do not support violence in the name of their religion at all, they were captured in police raids which often included gunfights in residential areas of Banyumas, Yogyakarta and most recently Cilacap. Terrorists are not only hated by those who suffer the consequences of such deeds, but also by their very own neighbors indeed.
But that is not enough to show the rest of the world that Indonesia in general is trying to fight what is wrong in their country. They also need people to speak out clearly against terrorism. That is what happened in recent days as well. Habib Abdurrahman - chairman of the Gerakan Umat Islam Indonesia - and KH Hasyim Muzadi - chairman of the second largest Islamic movement in Indonesia, Nahdlatul Ulama - have both clearly stated that bombing is nothing short of terrorism and has nothing to do with jihad in the real meaning of the word.
One of the pesantren currently - and earlier multiple times as well - under scrutiny is the Pesantren Al Mukmin Ngruki in Central Java. This radical school has been the cradle for a number of wanted terrorists in the past decade, but founder Abu Bakar Bashir denies any wrongdoing. He himself has been in and out of court for his alleged involvement with the 2002 and 2005 Bali Bombings, but was never convicted. Now this boarding school is back in the news again, and police say they are keeping a close watch. Closing this source of terror is too difficult as it might seem, but it's time action is taken.
