LIPPO CIKARANG - The current quick count being performed by the General Election Commission KPU shows that current president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is the clear winner of the presidential elections held yesterday. The results from almost 19 million votes was already sent to the KPU early this morning. These temporary results were send to the KPU by SMS from polling stations across the vast archipelago. Currently some 61.7 percent of the votes goes to Yudhoyono.
It is now most likely that no second round is needed for Yudhoyono to be re-elected. When he was elected president almost five years ago, he needed a second round to win from his direct opponent Megawati Soekarnoputri, which also tried to become president this time. A majority vote like this is a clear sign that Indonesians see their economy improving. Also harsh actions taken on many high-ranking corrupt officials is seen as groundbreaking in one of the most corrupt nations in the world.
