JAKARTA - The growth of the number of cases of HIV/AIDS in the West Java province has reached a dangerous level. The government therefore has decided that the program to prevent the spread of the disease has to get full priority as fast as possible. The provincial health services counted some 4.520 cases of HIV/AIDS in the province last March. Most infections occurred in the age group of 20-25 years.
"At this moment there is no reason to delay the fight against HIV/AIDS, also not from prevention. This is already an emergency," said the governor of West Java, Ahmad Heryawan in a press release. The announced actions were welcomed by the national secretary for the Commission of AIDS prevention PKA, Nafsiah. According to him, declaring an emergency, shows that the governor of West Java now sees HIV/AIDS as something that has to be prioritized.
In relation to budget, the government has to supply sufficient funds. Outside that, they also need to accept and use the help from other countries as much as possible," he said. Nafsiah added that the number of cases of HIV/AIDS among housewives is showing that this is an emergency indeed, since the heart of the family has been hit. In West Java, this number of cases is already so high, that real serious action is needed.
