JAKARTA - The head of the Indonesian police has promised to act stern against police officers which extort money (pungli) when giving service to the people. "Related to the service we offer, police often would like to see that some payment is made. Who dares to do that, is at risk. We will put them on trial," said the head of the Indonesian police force, Bambang Hendarsono Danuri in Jakarta.
Danuri also told that there would not be any prejudice made in handing out sanctions to those who cross the line. "Whoever and whatever the persons rank may be, this is a commitment we are going to hold up," he said. He also asked offiers to be open and clear to avoid getting involved in this kind of practice.
The head of the police is convinced that it's not only a strong management is capable of improving a system, it also needs the helping hand of better instructed officers in the field at all levels.
