A goodbye to the kampung LIPPO CIKARANG - After a day or four, which was a few days back by now, it was time to go back home to the 'civilized world', however that is a wrong choice of words if you ask me. My girlfriend and I decided that four days was enough, above all it was a 'mere' eight hours shaking by bus and 55.000 Rupiah to get here, so it was not something impossible if you want to go.

The last evening was a cozy one. We drank some coffee and extended the sitting outside from earlier on the day until the early hours of the fresh evening. Some people dropped by to say goodbye, since news here spreads really fast. At the time we really decided to go home, everyone was already informed about it. That can be called reasonably quick.

I took another shower with hot water directly from the wood fire and headed for bed soon after. Again it was a pleasantly fresh night like I already experienced three. I opened the window of my room so I could enjoy some fresh air flowing in. Several hours later I had already pulled a blanked over myself, folded for extra warmth. The window was closed by then.

The day started early. Not because we had to leave early, but just because it's way of life. The first animals wake up at around four in the morning. That is also the time at which the daily routine of humans starts. The wood fire is being revived for the first cups of kopi tubruk and teh hangat and later also a big bucket of hot water for my early morning shower. The goats behind the house get their load of fresh leaves and the chicken get some left-over rice, thrown out from the kitchen.

Only long after the afternoon nap - on a hard wooden bench on th veranda - we packed our stuff. Mom and dad were also preparing their cardboard boxed with all kind of food. I didn't really pay attention to it. Everything could go with us in the bus and it didn't cost anything extra. It didn't bother me as well. Even not if they would bring a kilogram of trasi to be used in the kitchen later, because mom is a good cook.

Completely packed and ready to go we waited for the last of the four ojek - in fact all family members that had little to do on this Thursday afternoon. For a tip they would bring us all to the bus terminal in Kawunganten, which was some 15 minutes away along the main road. The red suitcase and gray bag we brought also came back with us, including an additional suitcase and two cardboard boxes tied up with plastic rope.

When we arrived at the bus terminal, we still had one hour to go. Six o'clock in the evening, the driver told us. By then, mom had already left to buy oleh-oleh. We brought saleh pisang, three kilograms of crispy fried bananas. Always a good treat to give away, because you can keep it for quite a some time. Later that night I would eat half a bag of those as well. Some other snacks were bought as well.

Shopping only came to a halt when the bus driver walked around the terminal to inform the travelers that he was about to depart. The last people boarded the bus eventually and it was just a few minutes before we really left. The first two hours we regularly made stops to pick up some more passengers, but when the bus was finally filled up we were really heading home.

I did not take any precautions this time and I wanted to try to not use Antimo travel sickness tablets. I didn't take those tablets for travel sickness for years now - miraculously cured in Indonesia over the years - but because of the fact that they make you sleepy about one hour after you take a few of them so you are able to sleep during those long bus trips. This night was different. Every once in a while I closed my eyes, but for the biggest part I was fully awake.

Eventually we entered the roll road near Padalarang somewhere after midnight. From here the journey would go a little faster, and only via roll roads. Via the road south of Bandung we headed in the direction of Bekasi to finally end up at the bus terminal of Kampung Rambutan once again. There, our 'car with driver' - a friend who actually did the effort to pick us up at this unbelievable time - was already waiting for us. Back in the civilized world, but with memories never to forget.
