SERANG - A so-called mud volcano, which resembles the large 'Lapindo' mud volcano near Sidoarjo in East Java, has emerged in Serang, Banten province. The geyser-like structure exhausts sand mixed with mud as high as ten meters and also spreads a bad odor.
The mud volcano is formed in the village of Astana in the sub-district of Carenang. De mud volcano was formed when a worker was creating a well which should produce drinking water for a local health facility. When he was drilling, the mud fountain suddenly appeared. The bad odor started to spread directly as well.
The direct results are relatively limited, however the local health center that was being constructed has been destroyed. Building activities have been halted to prevent worse accidents from happening.
