Moving? Yes, but not to the Netherlands LIPPO CIKARANG - After I wrote an article recently, some people thought that I was about to return to the Netherlands. Indeed I was in the Netherlands and indeed I was about to move. Whether I put these two facts in one article on purpose or not, it were two things that played an important role at that moment. Both of them have been rounded off properly though and it wasn't that hard after all.

At the end of May I left Indonesia for the Netherlands for a day or ten. I had some things that I had to do there. The weather was nice and at some days summer-like, so it was also a time to enjoy, also when you just came from Indonesia where 'it is always warm like that', because that should not be an argument for not having a cold beer. Beer is also available in Indonesia, only this time the people I drank with are more in the Netherlands than in Indonesia, so that is the reason.

After those ten days I had seen enough of the Netherlands. I had seen my family and my new - also my first - cousin and the urn of my grandfather which breathed his last breathe on Christmas day last year after being on this planet for over 80 years. I was able to close those things of and head back to Indonesia since nothing much changes in the Netherlands over time. Once it will look different, but how long do you have to stay away to see it?

During my stay in the Netherlands I had regular contact with the people 'back home', Indonesia that is. I was about to move and my girlfriend reached out a helping hand. The house had to be cleaned first and would be painted, woodwork as well as all the walls. That was properly handled by the manager of the house and my girlfriend also helped out as a middleman to make everything run smoothly.

The house would be finished on June 1. I arrived one day earlier and noticed that the house was ready to be used on the second, it only needed it's floors cleaned for a last time. There was no garden yet, because I had to 'agree' on that first. A truck of tanah abang, red soil and 30 square meters of grass were dumped in front of the door. I was back in Jogja already to arrange moving my stuff from there.

On June 3 ibu Yuli arrived according the appointment we made, at nine in the morning. She just came to see what I had to transport. I would need a big truck to bring all that teakwood furniture which are very heavy and not 'knockdown'. I agreed with that and for a total amount of four million Rupiah (about 285 euro) everything would be properly wrapped, loaded and transported to Lippo Cikarang, my new neighborhood. Not a bad deal, so I did not have to think about that for very long.

June 4 at eight in the morning - also exactly according to appointment - the people who would pack my stuff knocked on the door. A team of eight. Ready to pack everything and even before one o'clock in the afternoon that was done already. The truck was ordered in and arrived before two in the afternoon. Loading the truck took until half past four. Sign here, exchange of telephone numbers and before it was dark, the truck had already left.

When I locked the front door I had a few things left to do. I had to book a ticket back to Jakarta, had to drink a beer to say goodbye in Cafe Janur in Prawirotaman and had to find a hotel in the same street to save on taxi trips. I was dropped off at Wisma Gajah by a friend. For 150.000 Rupiah per night I had a room with air conditioning, warm water and a bed. I didn't need a TV. Everything was arranged for in five minutes.

A ticket was no problem as well. I could choose between a darned early flight just after six in the morning with Mandala Airlines or a more friendly time of 09:20 with GA 205, Garuda Indonesia, for just two euro more. That one I took. However I wanted to be in Jakarta on time to catch up with the truck, I didn't want to loose hours of precious sleep because of that. The morning after I woke up pretty early, had my breakfast all by myself and before I knew it I was on the airport.

Around midday I arrived at my new address, while I was miscalled once at half past ten. I had just touched down at Jakarta and didn't turn on my mobile phone yet - unlike many Indonesians - when my girlfriend tried to call me to inform me about the truck. It had already arrived in Karawang, which is near Lippo Cikarang. Eventually the truck arrived at my new address just half an hour earlier than I did. Perfect timing. Unloading took about two hours, moving the most heavy items also. I handed out that job to eight tukang ojek who normally spend their days playing chess under a tree.

There I was, from Yogya to Lippo Cikarang in something like 48 hours. Without delay everything was delivered in perfect condition. Maybe it's something rare, but if you want to put in some effort by yourself, others will have less problems following you with that. Moving is normally something that drains energy, but not this time. Now I am here, I realize that I will feel at home here as well. I am going to make the best of it. Jakarta is only one hours drive from here, which can be a good thing as well as a bad thing indeed.

Hi Jeroen,
I gather your girlfriend is going with you to the new place? Won't she (and you) miss Yogya? And if I may be so impertinet: why did you move?
Anyway: good luck with/in the new place!

Jeanette,

I moved because my current girlfriend lives in the same area. All together I think it was best for me to 'start over' (it's not that heavy, it's still Indonesia and I brought all of my stuff with me as well) in another place now I had the chance to do so.

Will I miss Yogya? I am sure that I will go there every once in a while because it's a nice small city to live in, but since I am settled here I felt I made the right choice as well, so we'll see what happens. I can still go back if I really want to, because I didn't leave from Yogya because I had to.. that is the freedom I bring with me.

Hi Jeroen,
I kind of envy you......You actually live in Indonesia, while I like to do that, but cannot. Perhaps dare not....
I wish you love and happiness, stay well and sound, and enjoy!
Jeanette
