JAKARTA - They did it again. After they managed to get some 500 percent duty in all imported liquor - a draconian measure that is currently killing people daily, but 'religion above everything' seems to be the motto of the MUI - they now managed to stop beef imports from New Zealand all together. Some imports from Australia have been banned as well. This means a big part of the 70.000 tonnes of beef will not be imported anymore.
Consequences? The Indonesian Council of Islamic Scholars doesn't care about that, they only preach what is good for their religion and since Indonesia has a majority of Muslems, the rest has to follow and obey it seems. What once was a luxury meal with imported beef, a good bottle of wine and a smoke, has now been downgraded to a plate of plane rice, a meager piece of lokal cow - which more resembles rubber than meat - and a glass of air putih. Even a bloody rendang, which tastes better with imported beef, now has to be made from local beef.
Consequences are however that foreign tourists will notice this. They don't look for the cause, because they just want to enjoy, but they can't do that anymore and will take a trip to a neighboring country where they can still have reasonably priced wine and a nice three-centimeter steak. I happen to know that Malaysia (oh, always Malaysia) still has those items on sale. Sadly Indonesia is not run by the government, but by a dalang called MUI.
