JAKARTA - The Indonesian government is currently in talks with the United States to buy new Hercules C-130 planes produced by Lockheed Martin in two to three years from now. There is also a possibility that they will purchase fighter jets and u-boats. The government is targeting to expend some 1.2 percent of the gross domestic product for national security. At the moment this is only 0.68 percent.
"It is all related to how fast the economy will recover," said the Minister of Defense, Juwono Sudarsono at the time he was interviewed in Singapore. He was in Singapore to attend two meetings concerning national security, which were also attended by the Minister of Defense from the United States, Robert Gates. "Together with Gates we have discussed the possibilities for Hercules. Because the market for that plane is rather large, we will have to wait for our turns," he said.
