RIAU - Thick smoke caused by forest fires in the province of Riau on the island of Sumatra has hampered school activities. A number of schools in the district of Rokan Hilir has been forced to close down. Already a number of schools has been closed down, also in the neighboring district of Bangko, where almost all elementary schools have been closed.
Some schools in the district capital of Bagan Siapi-api are closed since yesterday. This has been done because the smoke from numerous forest fires in the area is still increasing in density. The area is covered under a blanket of smoke at the moment. The head of the Environmental Health group in the area, Sunah Alfalah, has said that the smoke is not very good for the health of people and also children.
"As long as the thick smoke is still over the area, I expect the schools to stay closed for the time being." The Meteorological and Geophysical Agency BMG in Pekanbaru has said that there are currently 59 fires burning in Riau.
