MATARAM - A change of color of Lake Kelimutu, which is located in a volcanic crater in the district of Ende in the province of East Nusa Tenggara is possibly a sign that a disaster is about to happen. One of the lakes is changing color, which causes locals to speculate about what will happen next. According to locals the change in color has been visible since just two days.
Normally the color of Tiwu Ata Pulo lake, which is a part of the Kelimutu lake district, is reddish, but now it has changed into a greenish color. According to the beliefs of locals, this is a sign that a big disaster will happen, just like in 1988. Back then the lake changed color from yellow to dark red. It didn't take long before a tsunami washed ashore on the island of Flores. Worries however, are waved away by park ranger Antonius Pora.
"According to scientists and surveyors which have the correct information, a change of color of the lake is related to a change in chemical compounds in the water, like iron and sulfur and other minerals. This causes the color change of the lake," told Antonius. He added that the lake could also change colors if there is more or less activity of volcanic gasses which come into contact with sunlight and give a chemical reaction in the water.
