JAKARTA - Along one of the main streets of Jakarta is the anonymous Graha BIP, a office building like others along the same street. It is just a little stroll to the Kartika Chandra Hotel and the offices of government agencies like LIPI and BKPM are just around the corner as well. No clear indication that the basement of Graha BIP is home to a place that is currently known as Dragonfly.
A very exotic name for something that could just be a parking basement. That is not what it is indeed, it is something completely different. The big open space has a large stage, a place for a DJ to play his musical mix and many place for people who don't want to sit down so it seems. But at least this guarantees a lot of people going in and finding a place. There also is a giant couch around a round table. This corner is only to be used by people that are willing to pay a lot of money for their night out here.
Early in the evening it is not very lively yet. It is of little use to be at the location at ten in the evening. Unfortunately I did not have a choice about at what time I could go there with a friend because I was dropped off. We just had to make the best out of it. The area was virtually empty, the DJ was probably taking a nap somewhere and the staf behind the bar acted like they were still on their lunch break or something. Ooh my, that did not look that good. But to keep spirits high I ordered two Corona beers for something like 60.000 - each and still before value added tax that is.
When I entered this place I noticed that there were some differences with other places that I had visited recently. Maybe the difference was caused by the fact that it was still so darn early on the evening, but I didn't search for any explanation as yet. When I entered the building I found my way to the cashier to pay the standard entrance fee for two people. I was ushered in without paying anything, as wel did my friend. Easy as that and without asking anything like a member card.
From the cashier it was still quite a walk to get to the main hall. Around that time there were just a few people, so that beer that I took was just to spend some time. At least we got in the mood already. During that beer small groups of people came in. Most of them seemed to have made reservations on beforehand because they were guided to their specific place along the large table.
It was almost sad to see that groups of friends and colleagues were put on less than one meter of table in such a wide open space. Six people on one meter of table is not that spaceous, even if you have two sides of the table available. Was this stinginess of the visitors or would it indeed be a fully booked evening? If I had to make a choice here I would defenately not go for the latter, only because it was far from crowded around midnight.
It did just take a short while when, all of a sudden, the large round table and couch were occupied as well. It seemed to fill up pretty quickly this way. With the big group of people also came many bottles of liquor and even more small glasses. The women were generally dressed in dress or short skirts, as usual. All of a sudden the DJ was changed for a new one and music changed drastically instantly. This caused a disturbing moment for most visitors I suppose.
It didn't take long fortunately for the music to be back like it was earlier on and most visitors expected it to be. The music was okay, liquor widely available and eventually the night turned into a dancing mood in which the big round table as well as the small bar-like table were used to dance. It were mostly those women in their short skirts that were dancing, with the men giving encouragements from the floor below them.
