BANYUMAS - Natural gas leaks have sprung up in the village of Karang Lewas, in the district of Banyumas in Central Java. At the moment there are five locations where natural gas appears from the earth, where earlier this morning there were only two locations. Local police has taped off the areas concerned to prevent accidents from happening as hundreds of villagers gather around the gas leaks as a free form of entertainment.
A spokesperson for the Department of Resources and Minerals in the district have visited the location and told residents not to worry about this natural phenomena. The residents can even use the gas for cooking as it is of good quality. Junaedi, head of the Geological department said that the gas that emerges from the vents is methane gas, which has been formed by died off plants thousands of years ago.
To make it more clear how much gas there is, it will be examined by the provincial government with special measuring equipment as soon as possible. If it shows that there is a reasonable quantity of gas, it will be piped for use by local residents.
