PEMALANG - The head of the Center of Volcanology and Disaster Management, Surono, has said that the activity of the Mount Slamet volcano is still increasing. Observations at the observation post for the volcano in the village of Gambuhan show that since April 26, 2009 the number of lava eruptions and tremors is still increasing.
"At April 26 there were 222 tremors caused by the eruptions. A day later this number has increased to 333, thus the activity of the volcano is not showing signs of slowing down. The eruptions of lava are at the same level as earlier, reaching some 500 to 600 meters," he said during a telephone call earlier today. The alert status of the volcano is still at 'careful' and has not yet been increased to 'dangerous'.
Until this moment, the eruptions do not have much influence at the daily activities of the people living on the slopes of the volcano. There are some slight ash rains, but the ash is thin as winds flow it away. The volcano itself almost continuously produces lava flows and exhausts of hot molten rock up to altitudes of 600 meters. Because of thick fog around the peak of the volcano there was no visible observation since earlier this afternoon.
