PEMALANG - The alert-status of the Mount Slamet volcano has been raised from 'normal' to 'aware' because of a drastic increase of the water temperature inside the crater. The change came into effect yesterday afternoon. Based on information from the observation post for the volcano in the village of Gambuhan, the volcano produces 203 tremors yesterday. Normally this is somewhere between 40 and 90.
The temperature of the water inside the crater, which normally measures between 100 and 200 degrees Celsius has now risen to 700 degrees Celsius. The water temperature started to raise late January 2009. Earlier this morning the volcano started to emit plumes of ash up to a distance of eight kilometers from the peak of the volcano into the direction of the observation post. The ash rain lasted five minutes.
There are four different craters on the Slamet volcano, but only one is currently showing increased activity. The other three craters seem to be sleeping. The currently active crater has a surface of some 12 hectares and is between 100 and 150 meters deep. The water temperature at a tourist hot springs in the sub-district of Guci has been on the increase as well in recent days.
