PADANG - The activity of the Mount Kerinci volcano is increasing as well. This news follows after Mount Anak Krakatau is also more active than usual yesterday. Since yesterday, the volcano is rumbling without interruption. For now the rumbling takes place inside the volcano. "Since yesterday the activity of the Kerinci volcano is increasing. There are continuous explosions," according to the head of the observation post for Mount Kerinci, Heri Prasetyo.
Up to this morning, the volcano emitted clouds of smoke with heights up to 400 meters. Hundreds of tremors and small earthquakes were also caused by the rumbling volcano. The biggest shock until now was a 5.0 at the Richter scale. The status of the volcano however is still at 'aware'. People living on the slopes of the volcano should be aware of any eruptions at all times, because the activity of the volcano is still said to be increasing.
The 3.805 meter high Mount Kerinci - which is located in the Kerinci Seblat National Park - has become more active since April 13, 2009, with the biggest increase since last Sunday. Villagers that live on the slopes of the volcano should wear a dust-mask at all times to protect themselves from the dangerous ashes. The open crater where hot molten rock can be seen is about 120 x 100 meters wide. Because of the usual fog at the peak, it is often hard to have a visual image of the volcano's summit.
