A peek into Jakarta's nightlife; Aphrodite JAKARTA - It is a humid night - like most nights in Jakarta indeed - after some light rain when I sit in a taxi on my way to meet two female friends. First something to eat and then enjoying the nightlife until the early hours of the next day, that was the deal we made by SMS during the course of the day. SMS-ing is much more convenient than calling each other all the time because connections are often not optimal. Another important thing is that SMS-es can be read again in case you forgot something.

I am not very good in remembering names of areas and streets. That is not a big problem as well, because as long as you know where you are in general, you can possibly find your way yourself Unfortunately that was not the case as well. I woke up around six in the morning and only arrived at the airport of Jakarta around six in the evening. An hour later I boarded the DAMRI-bus that would bring me to the Indosat headquarters at the southwestern tip of Medan Merdeka. The first taxi that crossed my path, a white one with the name 'Celebrity Taxi' (who came with that name I don't know, honestly), was the one I used to avoid waiting any length of time.

"Aphrodite, Taman Rasuna", I told the driver in a quite straight-forwarded way. That is all I still remembered from the SMS that I received a few minutes ago. That is where I had to go, but where it was exactly was still quite a mystery to me. That is what the driver doesn't know because I just told him where I wanted to go, so no problems with driving around endlessly and entering wrong streets but directly to the destination and in the last part of the trip some 'left' and 'right' to the driver before I was dropped off at the back entrance of Aphrodite.

The back entrance indeed, but there was no other option. The main entrance was being renovated, so until now everything went according to plan. At the door two security guards, one with a cigarette and the other with a glass of water in his hand. "Malam, pak," and without any further checks I could proceed to the area from which a gentle early evening music came from. A narrow alley with some scary-looking blacklight brought me to the area where I had to be. A warm wave of pleasant atmosphere engulfed me there.

The nicely decorated area with several different levels - several steps only, not entire floors - made it possible to play with different settings of seatings. A long bar, a floor with lights with tables, a number of regular seats and tables and some 'lounge' sofa's to enjoy a good glass of wine after dinner. Nice decoration and the atmosphere was very pleasant as well. I added myself to the table where two friends were already waiting for me, enjoying a bottle of Aqua, mineral water.

The restaurant was mainly populated by European expats in blouse, and some of them even wore a tie. That was way too official for me, so I did not join them. Even at the office back in the Netherlands I never had to wear a tie as well, so why should I wear one going out for dinner? I assume most people here came straight out of their offices, so it might be more comfortable to leave everything like it is. The tables in the restaurant quickly filled up with colleagues. The waiters were working hard enough to keep up with the quick flow of orders.

The two young ladies had dressed themselves pretty well for the evening that was about to come; one in a red dress, the other in a mainly black one with sparking decorations over the part of her body that gets some attention anyway because she doesn't look bad at all. When I am in Jakarta I tend to dress up more sophisticated than in Jogja; proper shoes and a blouse is the minimum, before you know they see you as a pemulung or turis and you are denies access because you didn't dress according the dress code.

The meal was a nice mix of European food; a big dish of spaghetti, half a chicken with french fries and a big bowl of lasagna with a large amount of minced meat inside. Enjoying a cold Corona beer - including some lime - I started my evening out here in Taman Rasuna. I did not know yet where the evening would end, there I rather saw that as a little surprise. During the drink after our wonderful meal - Corona again, no wine for me now - we decided to go to B.A.T.S., because some friends would show up there as well later that night. Fine for me, I still remember the place from some time ago when I visited it and I could remember everything was fine that evening.
