JAKARTA - Two Canadian women are facing four years' jail in Indonesia after being arrested while allegedly smoking a marijuana joint during their holiday, police said Thursday. The women, aged 31 and 30, were arrested in February on the eastern island of Lombok and remain in custody, police said.
"The two women were arrested in February while they were smoking cannabis," Central Lombok police chief Suryanto told. He said the Canadians - kindergarten teachers on holiday - were in possession of 3.6 grams of cannabis when they were arrested in their hotel room.
Police had followed the women for several days before making the arrest. "They will appear in court soon," Suryanto said. Indonesia categorises marijuana as a dangerous substance on the same level as heroin. A spokeswoman at the Canadian embassy in Jakarta said she could not comment on the arrests.

Two arrested Canadians remain in police custody
Two Canadian women arrested by the West Nusa Tenggara police for using and owning 3.6 grams of marijuana remain in police custody since February, Antara news reported Wednesday.
"It's an order from the top, as long as the case is being processed, the two Canadians remain in custody. Since their case is being handled by the Lombok police station, that's where they are being held," West Nusa Tenggara regional police spokesman Tribudi Pangestuti said.
Teachers and Central Lombok 'homestay' organizers Kathleen Ann Elisabeth, 31, and Christa Mary, 30, were arrested at their residence as they were lighting up a joint in Kuta, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.
According to Pangestuti, within the last three months the police have uncovered 25 drug-related cases with over 30 suspects.
Most of the arrests made, he added, were marijuana cases with over 1.562,2 grams of the herb confiscated as proof. Eight suspects have been arrested so far, including the two Canadians.
"The drug arrests we've made so far mostly occur in Mataram," Pangestuti said.

The thing to say in this case is "hard luck".
I know that in western countries a bit of weed is seen as nothing to get upset about but in smaller places in Indonesia it's a major crime deserving years in the nick.
Two things come to mind. They must know that and therefore the risk is theirs so, as I say, hard luck and they are being very rude.
If you go to live in a country, you should obey the laws and respect the customs of that place.
