BANDA ACEH - Indonesia has opened a tsunami museum in Aceh province to remember the severity impact of the catastrophe in 2004 that killed more than 230,000 people in Asia and most of them in the province. The museum displays pictures of victims and the huge damage in coastal areas of the province in northern tip of Sumatra island when a tsunami triggered by a strong earthquake devastated the area on Dec. 24 2004.
"The museum has been opened in Telang Padang district," head of Aceh Development Planning Rahman Lubis told. The four-level building also exhibits stories of survivors and an electronic simulation of tidal waves, said Lubis. The museum, which was opened on Feb. 23, functions as an educational center and an emergency disaster shelter.
The catastrophe drew global solidarity as emergency aids from multi-nationals came to Aceh in which more than a half million of survivors internally displaced and live in shelters at the time. The province has just completed its four-year 7 billion U.S. dollars reconstruction and rehabilitation schemes. Under the scheme, it has been rebuilding infrastructure, including houses, roads, bridges, schools and rice fields. Despite thousands of houses have been built, there are still hundreds of families living in barracks.
