PEKALONGAN - At least 400 houses in Pecakaran village, Wonokerto regency of Pekalongan, Central Java, were inundated with water levels reaching up to half a meter due to an continuous rainfall in recent days. The incessant rain also caused some bridges and farms in other neighboring villages to be broken and ruined by landslides.
"So far, there are no casualties, but the potential loss could reach millions of rupiahs," the Wonokerto regent, Budi Suswantoro said. He added that the village suffers flooding almost every year because the location is near the sea. "This time, the floodwater is deeper and worse due to an incessant rain flowing through the village," he said.
In such circumstances, the residents refused to move to safer places, but demanded logistic supports to help volunteers fixing public facilities including drainage system. Meanwhile, in Semarang province, a neighboring area of Pekalongan, landslides killed at least two people and hundreds of houses were inundated by floods.
Public facilities, including the regional airport, were forced to close after floodwaters on the main runway reached 10 cm. "Dozens of flights to Semarang in central Java were canceled Monday after the main runway was submerged," the Jakarta Post daily on Monday quoted the provincial spokesman Achyani.
He added that railways and roads were submerged by up to one meter of water, cutting major transportation links. Riverbanks overflowed Monday morning in Jakarta, forcing hundreds moved into emergency tent shelters, said Edi Darma, a Disaster Management Agency spokesman.
