MD82's; the Wings Air trash bin for air transport YOGYAKARTA - At the end of last year I was able to experience how it was to fly a brand new plane as well as a very old one in just a matter of days. That very old one was a short domestic flight from Jakarta to Yogyakarta with Indonesia Air Asia, while just several months earlier I had traveled from Yogyakarta to Kuala Lumpur with Air Asia in one of the newest planes - at that moment - in use with the airline. It was the new plane that fascinated me most, while I only thought about the old one a few months later.

Later was at the end of November of last year, when I made a return trip with Wings Air in a matter of a few days. A return trip between Yogyakarta and Surabaya with a plane is a form of luxury, since traveling with the bus or train will take half a day, if no track has been stolen overnight. No worries about the power lines here, as only a few lines in the Jabotabek area, Greater Jakarta that is, have been electrified until now. Early in the morning or just before closure of the airport is something you have to get used to when you want to catch a cheap flight. But that is not it.

After arriving at the airport of Yogyakarta it soon became clear that the old Wings Air plane, parked on the apron, indeed was mentioned for the passengers which were headed to Surabaya that morning. The typical cigar-like shape of the almost-fossil McDonnell-Douglas, an MD-82, can be recognized from thousands, even for just a passenger. For sure you can not call these planes new anymore, since they were built in the early 1980's. This doesn't have to mean much however, because good maintenance can make a whole lot of difference.

Maintenance is what seems to be in short supply here in Indonesia. In general that is, because there are always exceptions, but Wings Air is by far not that exception to confirm the rule. I would almost say that Wings Air is underlining the rule to not look at it anymore. But how can a non-expert like me tell something about it? If it only was the case that I could not say anything about it, that would mean the plane was still fine. But with problems I could see directly when I entered the plane, you don't need a whole lot of knowledge to see that maintenance is not much short of negligence.

The armrest of my chair was not attached like it should have, I suppose. In the first picture everything looks allright, but in the second one you can see it can be detached with ease. indahnesia.com

This plane had stickers in a number of layers on top of each other. Even more exotic languages than Indonesian hidden under the most recent stickers. Several of the overhead luggage bins could not be closed perfectly. No life-threatening problems indeed, but very untidy. My seat was lower at the left site and I was able to put the arm rest in my bag if I wanted to. Just a few of the things outside the fact that the plane was just plain dirty and neglected.

However I don't have much problems with old planes, sometimes I do actually think twice to fly with a specific airline in the future again. The fact that the European Union has decided to ban all Indonesian airlines from it's airspace back in 207 is their right and they had all the reason to do so if I see the conditions of some planes here. I am not an expert, but if arm rests are loose and chairs seem to wobble around than it will be bad service to the passengers in the first place and only after that a safety risk.

For now, no more flights with Wings Air for me anymore. It's just a matter of feeling, because as far as I know there has never been a big incident with this company. Late last year a wheel fell off the plane when it was about to land. However the cause of the dropping wheel is not known, it might be just the best like that. I don't need to have it confirmed that my plane was merely a dangerous piece of flying metal, even when the travels are already behind me.

Remark
The name Wings Air in this short story is an Indonesian company which is owned by Lion Air. This Wings Air should not be confused with the Wings Air airline that operates in the United States.

It's a shame indeed.
PK-WIK is notoriously known for an amazing stream of structural failiures.
Landing gear, visible damage on the bulkhead just behind the cockpit and toilet and at the entrance of the cabin. Windows cracking. And so on. Taping the same window with Ducktape. Mind you, this is an pressured fuselage !

But hey, we all can see the consequence of destructive maintanance.
The comment from air authorities when a plane comes down is, "As usual we arranged the same team to go on location (read crash site).

Welcome to Indonesia ! Emoticon: Frustrated

It's almost scary to see (and hear!) that wreck taking off, knowing that it's 27 years old AND in the hands of a company that doesn't take care too much. Emoticon: Nooo
