From cappuccino to Coca Cola Jack Daniels in one nights' out (II) YOGYAKARTA - The later it gets, the more clear it becomes that Kedai Kopi Jakal - Jakal is a subtraction Jalan Kaliurang, the street where the coffee house is located - has become a real gathering place. After ten in the evening the first groups of people decide to go out already. They will most likely be headed for one of the several nightclubs that Jogja has to spend the rest of the evening. Empty seats are filled up again in quite a short time, but they brought their laptop this time, so most likely they will be around for some time to come. That should not be a problem as well because they serve you until three in the morning of the next day.

With prices that are very reasonable for Jogja, this place attracts a varied group of people. In general younger people that start, hold or end their night out here. Rarely you will see someone alone internetting in a corner somewhere, they will flock here in groups and some even come from as far as Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang and Surabaya - as their car license plates show. Coming from that far all the way to Jogja to end up here, some just do it because they heard that this place is just fine.

That people appreciate the place becomes obvious when staff has to disappoint new customers that the first floor or the balcony - with a view over one of the most busy intersections of the city - is full already. Reservations are not made because those places will fill up after nine in the evening anyway, that is a luxury for the house. Customers don't seem to be bothered too much with it and just take some seats downstairs, maybe out of fear not to be able to sit down a while later because other customers keep coming in behind them.

The people that leave earlier in the evening - the women already dressed in their sexy short skirts but with a jacket over their shoulders - are heading for the clubs in the city. At close proximity are two of them at Jalan Magelang, via the ring road just two traffic lights to the west. Easy to reach so this place is quite an easy target for passers-by. Parking might look like a problem, but the parking attendants will handle that for you. Free parking, but most visitors will still tip them a 1.000 Rupiah banknote, a force of habit probably.

However no alcohol is available, some of the young adults that went through the door this night will enjoy a mixed drink with a quantity of alcohol in it later tonight. The fact that there is no alcohol here is no problem to them. That is just good, because liquor is quite expensive here because of simply ridiculous import duties. Locally brewed liquor - also sold under the name Jack Daniels - becomes increasingly popular here. Obviously a fake and sold for 15.000 Rupiah the bottle it is nice to have a drink and some food after clubbing, but then at a lesehan in the area.
