YOGYAKARTA - The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will appoint batik designs from Indonesia as one of the cultural heritages in May this year. The secretary of Coordinating Minister for Social Welfare, Indroyono Soesilo, said that the Indonesian people are hoping to establish batik design as heritage as soon as possible. "If UNESCO will recognize batik designs, it will be good for Indonesia since it will recognize our ancestors across the world," said Indroyono in Yogyakarta yesterday.
According to him, the entire process of getting batik recognized is hard and long enough. There are a number of demands that have to be fulfilled first. One of them is the preparation of academical material about batik and the full support of the government in the decision made. If UNESCO is to decide that batik indeed is a heritage, the Indonesian government as well as the people, are responsible to protect the original batik.
At this moment, Indonesia has been appointed six cultural heritage subjects appointed by UNESCO; they are the tropical forests, Komodo, the historical site of Sangiran, the Borobudur temple, the Prambanan temples and keris. "We hope that there will be more cultural things from Indonesia to be appointed world heritage in the future," he said.
