From cappuccino to Coca Cola Jack Daniels in one nights' out (I) YOGYAKARTA - It is still fairly early in the afternoon for a nice evening, but still life slowly comes out of the starting blocks. It isn't a nightclub, where the doors will be kept closed until around ten in the evening. It now happens in other locations in Jogja where preparations are made. All across the city students and young adults have created meeting points to start their Saturday evening together. One of those meeting points, to say it bluntly, is Kedai Kopi Jakal. This is the name that the place has earned already, because it is not the official name.

Right at one of the biggest - and most crowded - intersections of the city is a coffeehouse where you can get a wealth of different coffees besides tea, milkshakes and other drinks. For those who are hungry, there are also various snacks available, so they can fill their stomach as well. No alcohol here, because the targeted market is clearly the huge amount of students in this city. And that seems to work out nice. Fairly early on the Saturday evening, small groups of people start to flock to the location.

They are looking - in couples or small groups as most use their motorcycles to go there - a place in a lazy kursi Betawi or on the sofa. Most of them directly go to the first floor, away from the television that is downstairs. Spending the first hours of the Saturday night somewhat lazy, drinking a cup of freshly made coffee, while the rest of the group arrives as well. 'Waiting' here for hours is not a real problem. Not all people meet each other every day here, so this Saturday night is a nice time to chat about the past week as well.

Every time when people enter the place, loud calls from behind the bar: "Selamat malam!" from several members of the staff. Not only when it is quiet, but also later at night when the place has almost filled up and they have to work quite hard to keep up with orders made by the generally young people, they will still greet you in a friendly way here. As it should be of course, but often such a small thing will soon become a drag and easy to 'forget' when it is very busy.

While newly arrived visitors park their motorcycles directly in front of the entrance - don't lock it completely so parking attendants can still move it to the line of motorcycles already parked there - cars are parked directly at the roadside. Parking space is often somewhat of a problem, but in this way, the shortage of parking space is properly solved. When the evening is getting later, the streets will get more quiet and parking is even less of a problem.

Going home is something most will not do just after an hour or so. Groups of people are here now, laptops on their tables to surf the internet via the free wifi-connection available. However this is far from unique in Jogja, it is still widely used in places like this. They were able to pay for a laptop themselves in one way or another, but using internet is something that is often combined with social activities.

Maybe this is caused by the fact that the average internet-café only offers private boxes for a maximum of two people, so there are less social activities to be unfolded there. Here, that is much less of a problem because chairs are moved around to one side of the table to have a look at the most recent pictures of Indonesian singers and soap opera stars while they are being downloaded.
