JAKARTA - Two people were killed and buildings collapsed when a series of earthquakes hit eastern Indonesia's West Papua province on Sunday morning, said Satrio Nurhat, an official from the Indonesian National Disaster Management Center. Nurhat said that some local residential buildings and two banks were also damaged in the quakes, adding casualties and material damage were still increasing.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake jolted West Papua province at 4:43 a.m. local time on Sunday (19:43 GMT Saturday), followed by at least 25 aftershocks aftershocks measuring between 5.1 and 7.6 on the Richter scale. The strongest 7.6-magnitude aftershock struck at 7.33 a.m. local time (22:33 GMT on Saturday), with its epicenter at 0.88 degrees southern latitude, 133.38 degrees eastern longitude, and a depth of 10 km below the sea level.
