JAKARTA - As much as 300 people, gathered in the National People's Action Committee of West Papua (Komite Aksi Nasional Rakyat Papua Barat or just KANRPB) held a demonstration at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Jakarta yesterday. They demanded independence for West Papua during their demonstration. Earlier they also held an action at the State Palace a few kilometers to the north.
"Today we want to demand the independence of Papua because in the past we have not received independence, but the past can not be changed by those who are not really in power," said Wenslaus Edowai, a representative of the group. Edowai explained that the autonomous status that has been given to the region has only been to benefit of those who don't have their roots in the Papua region.
The regional government in Papua is only seen as an extension of the central government in Jakarta to establish and expand their power in the region. The declaration that was proclaimed contained four points; revoking the Indonesian government from power in West Papua because the occupation is illegal; revocation of the 1969 referendum; the right to own government and getting support for ending the Indonesian occupation.
"We will continue our fight for the aspirations of the people until the moment Jakrta will give us space for referendum," said Edowai. After an hour of demonstration it ended quietly. During and shortly after the demonstration there was more police at the scene than normally, but they did not have to take any action.
