JAKARTA - Prolonged uncertainty over whether of not the epic Tour de Indonesia cycling event would continue has ended with an announcement from the Indonesian Cycling Association (PB ISSI) that the race will take place in 2008. The 1,035 km race from Jakarta to Bali will be held November 23 - December 5, 2008.
Working in a coordinated fashion with the cycling associations in Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java and Bali - the PB ISSI will oversee the grueling tour that travels through the populous areas of Java before penetrating Bali's north and making the final dash to a finish in downtown Denpasar. In a change of previous year's routes, this year's Tour de Indonesia will not call on the Central Javanese city of Solo, but will divert to the coastal regional capital of Semarang before traveling to Yogyakarta and on to Madiun in East Java.
While major sponsors are still being sought, Bali Post reports that PT Telkomsel have agreed to underwrite the event. The sponsorship of the Tour de Indonesia was sponsored for the past six years by the Indonesian cigarette maker Djie Sam Soe who are no longer affiliated with the popular bike race.
