JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has decided to cancel his planned state visits to several European countries. He will not bring a visit before the ban for Indonesian airlines to fly to any country in the European Union has ended, in special the ban for Garuda Indonesia. "The President only wants to fly with Garuda Indonesia," said Minister of Transportation Jusman Syafii Djamal.
Earlier, in May 2008, Yudhoyono had planned to visit Europe. That plan is now delayed indefinitely. However the government is disappointed, the Minister of Transportation said that all people involved in the issue of the flying ban are working hard to increase air safety and security.
The government is disappointed with the decision of the European Commission, which decided to extend the current ban on Indonesian airlines to fly to the European Union. The Minister of Foreign Affairs already informed the European Commission about their disappointment. "Indonesia is disappointed because the steps we have already taken are not enough according to European standards," said spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah from the Department of Foreign Affairs in Jakarta.
