JAKARTA - Supporters of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organisation clashed with Muslim hard-liners following a bloody attack on interfaith activists by the radicals. One person was injured in the brawl late yesterday between members of Nahdhatul Ulama and hard-liners from the Islamic Defenders Front in Yogyakarta on Java island. Angry crowds have gathered outside offices and homes of the FPI in two other towns on Java in recent days.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Suharsono said today he had received reports that other FPI members were travelling to the town. The brawl followed an attack by alleged FPI members Sunday on a religious tolerance rally in the capital Jakarta. At least 12 people were injured. It was this attack that caused countrywide attention for the FPI, which doesn't like spotlights to be directed on them like this.
A numer of important moderate Muslem groups and representatives from different religions and government departments have called the initial attack of the FPI on the peaceful demonstration "a stain on the Indonesian republic", a "disgrace to Pancasila" (the five state principles) and "misuse of Islam". With this debate heating up this fast, fears are now that it could lead to mor clashed between local residents and FPI supporters from various parts of the country.

This is not going to end anytime soon so it seems. The people in the street seem to have reached the point where they don't want to see FPI as a part of their lives anymore.

well, all i can say is finally!!! it's been common knowledge for years now that when the FPI raids shops that sell alcohol they share the spoils with the police afterwards, that they blackmail nightspots, cafe's, poolhalls etc for lots of money andsoforth, here in bandung we all remember what happened to these types in Pangandaran, they won't dare to ever try their tactics overthere again... if the NU get's involved in this way with their 30.000.000 members it's lights out for the FPI...
it does reflect terribly bad on the government though, it highlights their ineptitude to deal with matters like this and the talk on the streets here is all how about the government, police and army are actually behind these fascists....
