JAKARTA - The World Bank has warned that northern Jakarta might be hit by tidal flooding next week as the sea level will rise by up to 1.21 meters. The head of infrastructure division of the bank Hongjoo Hahm said that tidal water, predicted to peak at 9:47 p.m. on June 3 and 10:24 p.m. on June 4, would hit coastal areas in north Jakarta.
"Tidal floods will also affect Cengkareng directly west of Jakarta and inundate Sedyatmo toll road which connects the city to the main international airport," Hahm was quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying here Saturday. The toll road, which provides the main access to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, has been inundated twice this year, on Feb.1-4, and May 8-9. The potential tidal flood is a result of an astronomical cycle occurring once every 18.6 years, said Hahm.
Meteorology and Geophysics Agency spokesman Ahmad Zakir Zamawi said the capital will see cloudy skies for most of next week. The capital saw flooding caused by high tides in coastal areas in November and December last year, as well as May this year. Hahm said sandbags could be used to lessen the risk of tidal flood in coastal areas. He said that tidal flooding in northern parts of the capital has become more threatening because of land subsidence.
