JAKARTA - Two Dutch prisoners are threatened to be executed by a firing squad because they have been sentenced to death for producing ecstasy. According to their Dutch lawyer Bart Stapert the Dutch government is not taking enough action to prevent the capital punishments from being executed any time soon.
The counselor rings the emergency bell and has sent an emergency letter to the Parliament and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Justice. He calls for the government to act directly to support the two Dutch persons in prison and for support to reopen their cases and to pay for that as well. Stapert said that only immediate action could make a difference between life and death in this case.
His client Ang Kiem Soei was convicted in 2003 for his part in the production of ecstasy. The other Dutchman which is facing the firing squad as well was convicted in 2006 in a different case. "Both were convicted in court, but that was flawed at many points," Stapert emphasizes. "They didn't have access to lawyers that were specialized in or even had any experience with cases as important as these."
