PEKANBARU - A landslide in Indonesian West Sumatra province of Sumatra Island on Saturday evening blocked transportation with nearby provinces, National Disaster Management Agency said on Sunday. A kiosk and a truck were buried by the landslide, said Setio Sutarmo, an official of the agency.
"We have just received report from field officer that one house and a truck carrying cement were buried by the landslide, but there is still no information about victims," he told. The landslide occurred on a highway connecting Lima Puluh Koto district in West Sumatra and Pekanbaru city of Riau province, blocking the highway for about three kilometers, he said. Indonesia is frequently hit by landslides and floods due to lack of forest covered areas because of deforestation and forest destruction.
