SIDOARJO - Quite a big number of gas leaks has emerged in the area of Siring Barat in Sidoarjo, eastern Java. The government body which handles the Sidoarjo mud flow (BPLS) has started working on these gas leaks to prevent accidents from happening. BPLS has forbidden residents to light a fire near the leaks or to use the gas as a place for cooking as it can be very dangerous. The local leader of BPLS, Ahmad Zulkarnaen, was given this information when he brought a visit to one of the new gas leaks in the sub-district of Siring Barat.
The gas leaks that have emerged in Siring Barat contain highly flammable gas, like methane, which can be dangerous to local residents. Unfortunately the number of leaks is increasing and if one of them catches fire it will be hard to put out again. Until now, BPLS didn't take any action to prevent the number of gas leaks from growing more. BPLS is just observing the situation and warning residents not to light fires.
Since the leaks containing gas occurred in Siring Barat, a some of the villagers have attached some pipes at the gas leaks. They use the gas for cooking. There are even villagers which, unknowing of the dangers, are smoking near the leaks.
