SIDOARJO - Some 200 residents of the sub-district of Siring Barat, in the area of Porong in the district of Sidoarjo in eastern Java, demonstrated yesterday in front of the building of the local government of Porong. They want that the area they live in is included in the map on which the mud flow is indicated, so they can claim the right for payment. Last Thursday a dam broke, after which their area flooded with watery mud as well.
Before the dam broke, the four neighborhoods were inhabited by 250 families. They had to deal with the mud flow before. The drinking water from the wells in the area became undrinkable. Earlier last month they were already complaining about the fact that supply of fresh water became more scarce because of delays in delivery from Lapindo Brantas.
The demonstration ended when the demands were received by the village head of Siring, Mohammad Fain Gazali. Mohammad will bring the complaints to the head of the sub-district Porong, Saiful Aji who will be responsible of bringing this issue under the attention of the regent of Sidoarjo and the governor of eastern Java in Surabaya.
