MALANG - Dozens of houses in the village of Tumpakrejo, in the sub-district of Gedangan Malang in the district of Malang in eastern Java, were damaged by a landslide. Five of them were heavily damaged. There were no casualties in this event. The landslide occurred after heavy rains lashed the area almost continuing for the last two days. The landslide occurred in the afternoon, so all people in the area were able to rescue themselves.
About sixty families are forced to find shelter in the next village or in houses of relatives. The village of Tumpakrejo is now named as a danger zone for landslides because there are cracks in the ground at several points and the ground is also moving slightly.
A landslide also occurred in Pacitan, eastern Java. In the village of Nawangan six houses were flattened and hundreds others were damaged. A school and a house of prayer were also damaged. There are no reports of any victims until now. Vilagers reportedly heard sounds from above their houses, which caused them to flea. The six houses that were destroyed in the landslide are covered in some seven meters of soil.
