SIDOARJO - Rail traffic in eastern Java came to a halt on Friday afternoon after an emergency dam at the mud flow gave away earlier last night. The railway between kilometer 32 and 33 is flooded with mud with heights up to half a meter.
The dam that gave away is located between Tanggulangin and Porong. The mud spilled over Jalan Raya Porong and the railroad. The Department of Communications informed that the railroad that was flooded by the mud was that between the cities of Surabaya and Malang via Jember in eastern Java. The track can not be used any more at this time. because using the track currently is a danger to safety.
Earlier today the Mutiara Timur train was canceled until further notice. This train runs on the route Surabaya - Porong - Pasuruan - Probolinggo - Jember and back. Currently the diesel train to Malang and environs keeps to be scheduled, however it will follow an alternative route via Kertosono, which will cause it to be running five hours longer than normal to reach it's destination.
