JAKARTA - The Meteorological and Geophysical Agency predicts that in the coming days big parts of Indonesia will be hit by rains with an intensity between light and very heavy together with strong winds. There are warnings outstanding for the new years celebrations in Jabodetabek where it will most likely rain throughout the day. This information was released by Achmad Zakir, who is head of the information department of BMG.
According to Zakir, the areas that are also prone to heavy rains are the western coast of Sumatra, Java, Bali, the Lesser Sunda islands, Sulawesi and Papua. BMG also informs that together with the rains there can be strong and sudden winds which can cause high waves in coastal areas. These winds however are still within normal ranges.
BMG also informed about the fact that they expect parts of Indonesia will be prone to flooding during the entire month of January. Heavy rains which could reach up to 150 millimeters a day are possible to happen in Lampung, big parts of Jakarta, central Java, eastern Java, Kalimantan and Sulawesi. According to Zakir, BMG will keep observing this weather during the first weeks of 2008.
High waves expected in the first days of 2008 could also lead to flooding of some coastlines.
