BOJONEGORO - The floods in the district of Bojonegoro, eastern Java, on Sunday expanded. Earlier 14 sub-districts were flooded around the city, but earlier today the city itself was partially flooded as well. As reported by a reporter for Metro TV, a number of main streets, including Jalan Gajah Mada, were submerged in floodwaters.
The economic activities in the affected areas slowly grind to a halt when floodwaters entered the main streets of Jalan Pattimura, Basuki Rahmat as far as Panglima Sudirman with heights up to 1,5 meters. Most of the shops choose to close down. Residents which houses are flooded evacuated themselves to higher places nearby. The main road that connects the area of Bojonegoro with Cepu and Ngawi is also closed down because of the floods.
Together with rescue workers, reporters from Metro TV were able to fly over the disaster area with a small plane. 114 villages in fourteen sub-districts are hit by floods already. The floodwaters also submerge 7,300 hectares of rice paddies and 1,800 hectares of normally dry agricultural fields.
