JAKARTA - Landslides and floods caused by heavy rain have left at least 120 people dead or missing on Java. Rescuers struggle to pull out bodies under the thick mud. Officials inform that thousands of people have become homeless when their houses were submerged by floods or destroyed in landslides in villages near the Bengawan Solo river in central Java.
Some 40 people went missing after floodwaters swept away a bridge in the district of Madiun last Wednesday. In neighboring central Java some 1,000 rescue workers, police and soldiers are digging through thick mud to rescue the bodies of 26 people buried under a landslide in Tawangmangu, a hilly area that has been hardest hit by landslides until now. Rescue workers at the scene had to use manual equipment because heavy equipment could not yet reach the area.
"We are only left with basic tools, such as spades and ploughs, yet we face a 7-to 9-meter blanket of mud," told local police chief Rikwanto. Rescue workers here found 12 more bodies last Thursday, bringing the confirmed death toll to 48, told Heru Pratomo, head of the regional disaster relief agency of the district of Karanganyar. In two neighboring districts, another body was found and an additional 14 are still missing.
