KARANGANYAR - The number of victims from the landslides in the district of Tawangmangu in central Java has reportedly risen to 71. Most victims were from the village of Mogol, as much as 37 people that lived there have died. Until earlier this evening, just five of the 37 victims were evacuated from the landslide area.
The evacuation is still ongoing. There is no heavy equipment in the area yet, so excavation is mostly done by hand and some light tools. The roads to the area can not be accessed by heavy equipment at the moment, since it has been blocked by other landslides in the area.
The disaster took place at around 04:00 local time (GMT+7) in the morning. Just 12 houses were destroyed in the event, but there might still be people under the rubble who were not able to flea the area on time. Rescue workers are not able to penetrate deep into the rubble yet.
This will be a good day for the tivi stations as a lot of people will look for the disaster coverage (and the commercials in between). They still think back of the wonderful tsunami days when they made a lot of money with the sensation television.
