BEKASI - Thousands of angkot (public transport) drivers in Bekasi, near Jakarta in West Java province are on strike. They choose to demonstrate in front of the Transportation Department offices of the regency of Bekasi instead. This protest is aimed at the so-called 'black-plate' angkot. Public transport in Indonesia uses yellow license plates, black ones are for privately owned cars. Using a black license plate is cheaper, illegal and causes losses to the official angkot operators.
This demonstration causes tens of thousands of passengers to be stranded without proper transport. Passengers in the areas between Tambun and Cikarang are most effected., in that area there is not a single angkot operating. The strike started at 04:00 local time (GMT+7). The stranded passengers hope they can get an alternative way of transport before they are forced to walk home or use an ojek (motor boy).
