PALU - Again a fight between residents from two areas in the city of Palu, Central Sulawesi, has been broken up by armed police. Residents from Tavanjuka and Nunu were fighting again. They brought big cutting blades, sticks and other materials to fight with.
Because the security forces feared a deadly victim, they prepared dozens of forces from the Central Sulawesi and Palu police force to set up a blockade at the location of the fights earlier. The police took action to prevent the people from meeting again and told them to go away and not to fight each other. The police also fired warning shots in the air to get the people away.
It is not exactly known what caused the fights. A number of residents from Tavanjuka claim that the fights started because residents from Nunu provoked them. Residents from Nunu however said this was not true. Until into the evening, the atmosphere at the locaton of the earlier fighting was not clear yet. There were still groups of people from both areas at the scene.
