JAKARTA - Hundreds of students who name themselves the Morning Star Youth Movement Anti-colonial Indonesia have raised the Morning Star flag yesterday. Hoisting the flag took place in a ceremony held in the deep forests near Jayapura. The ceremony was held to remember the day that the independence of Papua Barat was proclaimed. Outside a number of youth, the ceremony was attended by a number of members of the National Freedom Army of the Papua Independence Organisation TPN OPM.
This ceremony has raised some concerns with the local army. Marshall Sagom Tambun was shocked to hear about the situation when national TV-station Metro TV informed him about this event via telephone. He said that this was the evidence that the security was low enough for the youths to think they were free enough to raise the OPM flag. The Marshall thanked Metro TV for informing him about the event and promised to send people to the location. Sagom said that the members of the separatist group could count on proper sanctions. "The sanctions are very clear, there is no room for separatism in this country."
Sagom hopes that all people will help fight separatism. He said he was sure that the people he would send would be able to end the situation as soon as possible. In the first place Sagom hopes that the local police is able to deal with the situation however. But if this already has become an armed group, then it would be a responsibility for the Indonesian army, Sagom said.
