YOGYAKARTA - One person who worked as a sand miner in the Gendol river - one of the river beds on the slopes of the Mount Merapi volcano - has died because he was crushed to death under de weight of large stones that came down on him. The 45-year-old Saidi died on the location of the accident.
At the moment of the accident, hundreds of sand miners were mining sand on the eastern side of the river in the village of Kopeng, Kepuharjo, Cangkringan. A big piece of rock came loose at the location were sand was about to be mined and directly crushed Saidi to death.
A few of the other miners were able to rescue the body of Saidi. They brought it to a local hospital. The workers decided to stop working for a full day out of respect of Saidi.
